Hi Keith,
Your situation is one where people often use a career coach. I'd suggest looking at the reasons why you gave the management position up and whether those reasons still apply. For example if you found it too difficult, becuase of lack of training, would extra training mean you could enjoy the job more.? Perhaps talking to your old boss would give you some useful feedback. If the original reasons for giving up the job still apply, it would be wise to talk to the new owner to see if these can be dealt with. e.g extra effort required not justified by extra money. I would also investigate the new job and what it could offer you. There are many aspects to job satisfaction and you might find it useful to talk to a career coach. If you've been with your existing garage for many years a new challenge might be interesting. Before making your decision, gather as much information as possible about the new owner and the possible new garage. Hope this helps.

ive been told that i need to take charge of my garages second workshop. the thing is i done the same job in the same place two years ago for a year and myself and my boss agreed that it was best if i gave the position up, i was glad to, but now we have a new owner and he wants this to happen. i have an oppertunity to apply for another garage but i dont know how long that position will remain open. so my question is should i stay put or move on?
thank you

Hello Marion,
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
As you've siad there's been a lot of comment that the HPAT is all about reducing the number of females taking up medicine and having a better gender balance.
I've noticed that when an occupation becomes very feminised, it's not regarded as highly - think teachers & nursing. This I think reflects womens lesser status in society. Having worked in all female and all male environments, I've found both are signficantly more stressful than mixed men & women environments, and there is some research to back this up. So getting a better gender mix is not a bad idea. I'm currently trying to clarify some of these issues with HPAT and hopefully will comment further in a future post.

Hello. The real reason why the Hpat was introcuced was to stop the feminisation of medicine. Only about 10% of students studying medicine in some irish universities were male. With 90% female graduates our Department of Health was worried as to how they would staff the health service in the future as the majority of females want to work only part time once they are qualified. Also it was costing vast amounts of money to educate all these females and many just opted out and got married and had babies once they qualified.

Another reason was to discourate students repeating the Leaving Cert two or three times to get their place and this was also costing too much. Also students who could afford to go to the grind schools had a better chance of the 600 points. Now even with 600 points they are not guaranteed a place.

This is the truth behind it. It's not to get better doctors it was to give gender balance and to give equality to all students. That's why students had to put their gender on the exam paper, something which has never before been seen in this country. If it were to get better doctors there would have been an exam which students would have to pass and then the Leaving Cert points would come into play.

It was the 2 Marys putting their heads together - Mary Hannifan in Ed. and Mary Harney in Health.

There wasn't any issue with the quality of the doctors in the country. The quality could deteriorate now alright.
