Don’t be a money mule

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

We all get the fraudulent bank spam emails, and I thought everybody knew to avoid them. But there’s Minster Eamon Ryan,  with responsibility for communications, nearly giving away  his banking details! Link to Irish Times- subscription required

I’ ve  also noticed an increasing number of emails reaching my Eircom email account which offer jobs or use job boards in an attempt to steal your personal details for use in money theft.

They basically ask you to reconfirm your details. An example is shown below :

Dear Monster (Jobs & Careers) member,
Monster Technical Department requests you to complete Online Employer Form.
This procedure is obligatory for all clients of Monster.
Please select the hyperlink and visit the address listed to access Online Employer Form….

Never respond to these emails even if you’re registered with a job boards. Go to your jobs board web site by typing in the web site address(URL) and watch to see if there are any redirects(URL changes) that don’t look right.
Never send personal details such as PPS number, passport number, by email  if a recruiterÂ  requests it. These details should only be supplied when you’re at a later stage of the recruitment process. (See monster mistake) to find out why.

To be more secure, when posting your CV on these job boards, don’t give a full postal address or date of birth on your electronic CV. E.g state Rathfarnham and age 27.

Another fraud becoming increasingly popular is offering jobs where people work from home or in their own time. Many sectors have been targeted from sales to mystery shoppers, to data processing.

See example below

“Since its establishment in 1959, Waller Truck Co., Inc. has centered its family-owned trucking business on : QUALITY, FAIRNESS, HONESTY and UNCOMPROMISING CUSTOMER SERVICE
Due to our rapid expansion, we are seeking Regional Sales Managers in the UK
Vacancy offered is a part-time or second employment. You’ll be supposed to work from home, but at the same time Your Personal situation must allow you to travel around your place 1-2 hours a day on company assignments (that would be particularly trips to the bank and Western Union branches).
While implementing Company’s assignments You shall be working as a member of a group, helping to enlarge a base of our customers in countries all over the world and liaise with head office on a daily basis. You’ll be responsible for delivering high standards of customer service ensuring high delivery speed and quality of orders. That would particularly be done through managing a part of a sales cycle  ensuring fast remittance of payments through your bank account and then  through world wide Western Union system and calculating fees at each step……”

All they ask you to do is add another email to your paypal account and deal with some  paperwork which involves cashing cheques or postal drafts and you get commission.
Once you see the words your bank account or your pay pal account, you know it’s a fraud.
Problem is these money orders are stolen and you could end up on criminal charges as Ellen- link to Monroe News web site in the United States did. These criminals are looking for “money mules” to convert fake or stolen documents to cash.

For a full description of how the scam works.

So don’t get taken in. These criminals have now turned their attention to Ireland.
